:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- A great addition to the universe : I have high expectations for entries in Dan Willis' Arcane universe, and it has made itself one of my favorites by consistently meeting and surpassing them. That being said, I hesitated to read this one because I have been burned many times by authors trying to expand their offerings by doing novels or side series focusing on secondary characters. I was unsure how he could give them something big enough to drive a whole new series without taking urgency away from the primary or being so minor as to slide into irrelevancy by the end of this book. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from ANSWER 42 -- Great addition to the Arcane Case files : I'll admit I love Alex and the arcane Case files. Danny is a longtime character, but I honestly wasn't that excited about him having his own story, I didn't think it would be that interesting. Boy am I glad I was wrong! Agent Redhorn and agent Mendes also played a large part in this story as well, and we got to know the sorcerer John Rockefeller. Even more interesting then your typical second line character side story was the number of ways it will impact the Arcane Case File series. I'm very excited about as this really opens up the world Alex and Danny live in and set the stage for some very interesting books to come. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2021 )

If you like stories of magic and action, this is a must read. If you like gumshoe stories set in the early industrial period, again a must read. If you like all of the above, this is an absolute must read! The characters are realistic, human, and relatable despite the magic in the story world. The action is paced just right. The same solid writing and characterization is applied to background characters from that series. Grab this one ASAP and you'll eagerly await future volumes. The heck with superheroes! An exciting new addition to Willis' world. Danny, an already interesting character, is becoming a good protagonist. Agent Redhorn, is being fleshed out to make him as interesting as Danny. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Godfather -- Waiting for the next book : First I like all these characters from the arcane case book series. Seeing them run on their own is just fantastic. So now we have 3 magic task forces. The fbi, the super secret book and terrorism, and now the secret limelight magic user task force. I don't think they can keep it secret from Alex and sorcha, they are way to smart and will realize something is going on. At least Danny can have a Rockefeller flashlight. Good yarn, great, well-developed characters, strong plot. I enjoyed this initial foray and look forward to more in this series and in the Lockerby Runewright Detective series. More please. ASAP. His magical 1930s New York feels like a parallel universe, but a neighboring one. His protagonists could be your coworkers or they guy you dated in college. They, with all their flaws, feel real.
